In today's fast-paced world, where our attention is constantly pulled in multiple directions, finding moments of peace and tranquility can feel like an elusive dream.
Yet, amidst the chaos, there exists a simple and accessible activity that can transport us to a realm of relaxation, stress reduction, and unleashed creativity: coloring.
If you’re not yet a coloring enthusiast, this may seem trivial to you and you may even scoff at the very idea of being a grown adult using a coloring book unironically, but here me out!
I got into coloring as an adult purely by accident. One night I was visiting one of my cousin’s, simply relaxing out in the country and catching up when his daughter - aged 4 at the time - decided she wanted to colour.
But she didn’t just want to colour, she wanted me to do it with her. She invited me to one of her colouring books, shared her wax crayons and we shared a wild conversation about what colours the various birds and puppies should be.
As we coloured together, I remembered feeling so relaxed.
The ever-present tension in my shoulders relaxed and they were no longer reaching for my ears. My stomach relaxed, my mind cleared of the brain fog and my own small amount of embarrassment at enjoying this activity so much.
I realised just how fun this was. My inner child was excited and enjoying herself so much!
And so I kept on doing it.
Initially it would be solely with my cousin’s kids or with my niece and nephews, but over time I began to buy my own and was beyond thrilled that there were so many options for adults to enjoy as well.
I like bold and open spaces to colour, but I’m also a sucker for smaller, more intricate designs and I enjoy bringing life to the various scenes and experimenting with colours and techniques.
Coloring not only relaxed me, but it also empowered me to be more present, to remind myself that my creativity isn’t just for my job, but something I can enjoy in different ways.
It was good.
It was so good I launched my own collections using technology and now invite you to see things differently and give yourself this form of self-care as well!
If you’re into painting, wax crayons, coloured pencils, markers what have you, let your creativity shine within these illustrated lines and gift yourself that kindness with all of its amazing healthy benefits.
Below I go further into this!
Beyond Child's Play: The Profound Benefits of Coloring for Adults
While often associated with childhood, coloring is far from being a juvenile pastime.
In fact, it has emerged as a powerful tool for adults seeking solace and creative expression.
Scientific studies have revealed that coloring can significantly reduce stress, enhance focus, and stimulate creativity.
The rhythmic and repetitive motion of coloring acts as a balm for the mind and body, inducing a state of calmness and tranquility.
This can be particularly beneficial for individuals grappling with anxiety or feeling overwhelmed by life's demands.
As you immerse yourself in the act of coloring, your worries fade into the background, replaced by a sense of peaceful focus.
Moreover, coloring has been shown to improve concentration and attention span.
When you're engrossed in selecting colors and filling in intricate patterns, your mind becomes less susceptible to distractions, allowing you to fully engage in the present moment.
This heightened focus can be invaluable for tasks that require sustained attention and mental clarity.
But perhaps one of the most compelling benefits of coloring is its ability to ignite creativity.
As you experiment with different color combinations and explore intricate designs, you tap into your inner artist and unlock new avenues of self-expression.
Coloring provides a safe and non-verbal space to unleash your imagination and discover hidden artistic talents.

It has been shown to improve fine motor skills, enhance hand-eye coordination, and promote mindfulness.
The sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a coloring page can also boost self-esteem and confidence.
Furthermore, coloring can be a social activity that fosters connection and camaraderie. Joining a coloring group or sharing your creations with others can create a sense of community and provide opportunities for creatives to share and relate with each other on a whole other level.
